Police say that DaMontez died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, according to the St. Louis Dispatch. The shooting took place on Friday evening at around 7:30 p.m. at his home in Williamstown, Missouri.
Many troubling questions remain, but police say the teen was home with his older teenaged siblings when the fatal incident occurred. Police have said the siblings weren’t in the room when the gun discharged, however.
Police are working to retrieve photos from the phone DaMontez may have been using to take the selfie. The phone was found next to where he was laying. Reportedly, the phone has mechanical issues and has been sent to a police lab to retrieve data from the device.
The gun Jones shot himself with belonged to his mother’s fiance, who works as a security guard.
DaMontez reportedly found the gun in a bedroom closet. It was lying on the top shelf and was not in a locked box, nor did it have a safety lock. Police have said its possible, though not likely, charges could be filed.
The 15 year old had just completed his freshman year at Ritenour High School.
