Omar Mateen, the man who stormed an Orlando gay nightclub and shot and killed 49 people and wounded more than 50 others, was known to be gay himself, according to classmates who attended a police academy with the now-dead mass killer.
One particular male classmate recalled Mateen being a regular attendee of gay clubs, and even asked the schoolmate (who requested media not reveal his identity) out on a romantic date. The schoolmate said he declined Mateen’s dating invitation.
“We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” the former classmate said.
Reportedly, Mateen also connected with other men on gay social networking apps and websites.
“He just wanted to fit in and no one liked him,” he said. “He was always socially awkward.”
When asked if she believed her ex-husband may have been gay, Mateen’s former wife replied, “It seems likely”.
Authorities believe Mateen at some point became a radicalized and then sought to commit the worst mass murder in U.S. history committed by a single gunman.
