Devastatingly tragic news from Atlanta: rapper Shawty Lo has been killed overnight in a hit and run accident in Atlanta.
The Atlanta-born rapper catapulted to fame after releasing his Balist Beats-produced track, Dey Know, in 2008, and would go on to record additional mixtapes after that.
Shawty Lo, real name Carlos Walker, originally entered the rap game as a shadow member of D4L, who recorded a major hit in 2005 with “Laffy Taffy”..
Fans and celebrities poured Twitter with condolences and expressed shock over the rapper’s untimely death. Walker was 40 years old.
Initial reports indicated Lo had been killed by a hit and run driver but police confirmed the accident was a single car crash. Two female passengers were able to escape the vehicle and were taken to an Atlanta hospital for non-life threatening treatment.
Lo’s white, late-model Audi was seen being removed from an embankment off Cascade Road in Atlanta.
Police say Lo was killed after he lost control of his vehicle, struck a tree, and the car then overturned and caught fire.
Lo has reportedly just left the Blue Flame strip club moments before the crash.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
