Mary J. Blige Covers ESSENCE, Talks Love, Marriage Ending, and New Movie Role

The eternal Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, covers the newest issue of ESSENCE Magazine.

Blige is looking to move on up and away from controversy after splitting from her husband of 14 years, Kendu Isaacs, in a highly publicized divorce that saw Blige forced by a court to hand over $30,000 a month in spousal support to Isaacs–who Blige said lavished a side chick with Blige’s nice things while she and Isaacs were married!

He also allegedly fathered a kid outside the marriage.

Mary had once credited her relationship with Isaacs with reinvigorating her life.

After the marriage collapsed, she would end up calling Isaacs, who doubled as her manager, a “con artist”.

On Believing in Love Still: “Love is the only way. You can hate yourself while someone else is saying, ‘You can’t. You won’t. You never will.’ Or you can choose life…”

On Transforming After Her 14-Year Marriage Ended: “I had just come back from performing on the Bad Boy Family Reunion tour with all the nails and the wigs, and I wasn’t trying to depart from that. So when it came time to get into character, I was like, ‘Can I wear a lace-front wig? Can I get some lashes?’”

Blige has found refuge from her soured marriage in her career, and stars in the new Netflix Jim Crow-period drama, Mudbound, that drops on November 17th.

On Her Role As Florence Jackson in Mudbound, which will hit Netflix on Nov 17: “Shedding Mary J. Blige for Florence gave Mary J. Blige some confidence… like a lot of it. [On set] I could hear people whispering, ‘She’s so beautiful.’ And I was like, ‘Who the hell are they talking about?’”

Mary J.’s last abum, Strength Of A Woman, was relased this past April, and entered the charts at #3.
