Terrible news for Nelly fans on your Saturday morning. The rap legend has been arrested in Washington state on a rape charge, according to reports.
The rapper, birth name Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., 42, is currently on tour in the state and performed last night in Auburn, near Seattle. At around 3:45 A.M., a woman called police and said she had been raped on the rapper’s tour bus.
She reportedly ID’d Nelly as being the man who allegedly raped her.
Nelly’s bus was parked at an area Wal-Mart. Police reportedly quickly decided they had probable cause to arrest the rapper and he was taken into custody.
Nelly was booked on second degree rape charges and released this morning.
Few additional details are available at the moment, but Nelly was supposed to perform in Ridgefield, two hours south of Seattle, tonight. But a rape charge could certainly complicate that.
Nelly’s attorney said his client is “the victim of a completely fabricated allegation.”
Here’s the attorney’s statement:
“Our initial investigation, clearly establishes, this allegation is devoid of credibility and is motivated by greed and vindictiveness. I am confident, once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges. Nelly is prepared to address and pursue all legal avenues to redress any damage caused by this clearly false allegation.”
News of Nelly’s arrest became an instant trending topic on social media, with some users questioning why Nelly hand’t been more scrupulous in inviting alleged groupies on his bus.
