Here’s something special for your Way Back Wednesday: the late Rick James and Teena Marie performing their classic 70s ballad, “Fire And Desire”, at the 2004 BET Awards.
Rick James was a legendary singer and musician whose Funk-infused style and tumultuous personal life catapulted him into the stratosphere of pop culture.
Teena Marie was an irresistible songbird whose powerful vocals and deep-seated soul helped her transcend race to become one of the most beloved R&B artists to ever pick up a mic.
Together, they recorded the duet that went on to become a timeless classic, and–nearly 40 years after it hit the charts–a slow groove and Quiet Storm essential.
The two also made history, becoming the first interracial male/female pairing to perform a Top 10 R&B hit together.
This video and performance would be the last time the two performed together publicly: Rick James passed away in 2004, shortly after this performance.
Teena Marie passed away in 2010.
R.I.P. Rick and Teena.
