Music mogul Jermaine Dupri is a pioneer and architect of the Atlanta Hip Hop Takeover. And the So So Def CEO recently named his favorite rappers in the city.
While appearing on The Cruz Show, the Hip Hop honcho was asked who his 5 favorite ATL rappers were. Of course the hardly-ever-modest Dupri named himself, but also included some familiar names among his preferred rappers: Ludacris, both members of Outkast, and T.I. as his other favorites.
Dupri is a very short man. But he has made a giant-size impact on the music industry, and is an Atlanta icon.
He was pivotal to the creation of the “Atlanta Sound”, which for a while became synonymous with So So Def.
The label and Dupri’s production helped Atlanta become the capital of Urban music, beginning in the very early 1990s, with pre-teen rap duo Kriss Kross.
Dupri has worked with artists ranging from Mariah Carey to Monica to Xscape, and many others.
Dupri was previously in a long-term relationship with Janet Jackson.
For years, the massive So So Def billboard welcomed new visitors to the city.
Dupri’s father is longtime music producer and executive Michael Mauldin.
