Tragedy is once again at the Garner family’s door. Three and a half years after her father was killed by NYPD officers on a busy Staten Island street, Erica Garner has been declared brain-dead following a heart attack last week.
According to the New York Daily News, family members have begun gathering to say their final goodbyes to Erica, 27.
Erica remains on life support but the family is expected to remove her from support at an undisclosed time.
Brooklyn City Councilman Jumaane Williams was criticized for tweeting “Rest In Peace” overnight regarding Erica, who was still alive.
“She’s not gone, she’s brain dead,” Garner’s heartbroken mother explained. “Physically she is still with us.”
Eric Garner’s videotaped murder at the hands of police officers who used a controversial “chokehold” on Garner while he yelled, “I Can’t Breathe!”, triggered nationwide outrage and protests over police violence against citizens–most particularly, Black men.
“I Can’t Breathe!” also became a rallying cry for the movement.
Erica became an active and prominent voice in the movement.
Sadly, Erica had just given birth to a bay boy barely four months ago.
