Trump Widely Criticized Over Putin Meeting

President Donald Trump is under widespread criticism over his summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin this weekend.

Most mainstream media outlets and a number of political figures–on both sides of the political spectrum–have said Trump caved in to the Russian dictator, and deeply embarrassed the United States.

In the relatively brief summit, Trump announced that he believed Putin when he said Russia did not interfere in the 2016 election–an argument that the U.S. intelligence community has totally discredited.

Trump also made the unprecedented move to level criticism against the U.S. instead of placing the blame on Putin for meddling in America’s election system:

“I hold both countries responsible. I think that the United States has been foolish. I think we’ve all been foolish. … And I think we’re all to blame”, Trump said at a conference featuring both heads of state.

The criticism was broad and swift.

Trump later tried to mitigate the damage by offering this in a tweet:

“As I said today and many times before, ‘I have GREAT confidence in MY intelligence people,’” he wrote. “However, I also recognize that in order to build a brighter future, we cannot exclusively focus on the past — as the world’s two largest nuclear powers, we must get along!”
