Mike Smith has been let go as Defensive Coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to widespread sports reports.
The Bucs had started off hot early in the season with veteran backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who all of a sudden went wobbly. The Bucs have since struggled and were giving up the most yards of any defense in the 32 team league as of game time yesterday.
The Bucs let Smith go a day after the team came up short on the road against the also-struggling Atlanta Falcons, who hung on to beat the Bucs and hand them their third loss.
Ironically, Smith’s previous job was as the Falcons Head Coach. Smith is presently rated as that team’s most winning-est coach of all time. Smith was dropped as Falcons HC in 2014.
As the Falcons coach, Smith earned the Sporting News’ NFL Coach of the Year Award three times.
Smith has now been fired by half the teams in the NFC South.
