Comics Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart’s new comedy, Night School, won the box office wars this weekend. The film grossed $28 million in its opening weekend, easily beating films such as ‘Smallfoot’, which took in $23 million.
The $28 million opening is the biggest haul for a comedy since last year’s opening of Girls Trip, which took in $31 million in summer 2017–a film, just like Night School, that also came courtesy of Malcolm D. Lee, Will Packer and Universal.
Interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter noted School’s ethnically diverse cast, and somehow managed to break down the demographics of ticket buyers, of which less than 1/3 were Black.
“Caucasians made up 37 percent of ticket buyers, followed by African-Americans (30 percent), Hispanics (24 percent), Asian (5 percent) and other (4 percent), according to Universal”.–TheHollywoodReporter
