Nearly 100 cars were broken into in one night this past Friday at the sprawling Mall At Stonecrest, which is about 15 miles east of downtown Atlanta in Stonecrest, Georgia, leaving the car’s owners horrified–and obviously asking where was mall security and local police when all the stealing was going on?
“I was actually with a client and an officer from over here at the precinct came to me,” a woman who asked not to be identified but who works inside the mall as a nail technician told Channel 2 Action News. “He said, ‘Ma’am, please don’t tell me the Chevy Impala is yours.’”
The nail tech said a surprising lack of cameras doesn’t make things any safer.
“I was told there were cameras around here but there was never any cameras around here so that means our safety is In jeopardy,” she said.
Police say a robbery crew is to likely to blame. Three suspects were seen by police but the culprits escaped into nearby woods, according to WSB-TV.
The Mall At Stonecrest is one of metro Atlanta’s biggest shopping malls and features stores such as Best Buy, JC Penney, Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret, among many others. It also features an array of eateries.
Stonecrest had previously been an unincorporated area of Dekalb county near Lithonia but residents voted for cityhood in 2016.
Some residents say crime has been ticking upward in the new city and around the mall ever since.
