The Young & The Restless is bidding farewell to longtime series star Kristoff St. John, who passed away in February. St. John originated the role of Neil Winters on the daytime soap almost 30 years ago.
And at the time, there were few Black faces on daytime TV. Kristoff, 52, changed that and made his character one of the most familiar on the small screen.
The Neil Winters character also opened the door for two other actors on the show who would become household names: Victoria Rowell and Shemar Moore.
Y&R is featuring a story arc from Tuesday to Friday in which Neil Winters dies unexpectedly. Moore returns to the fictional Genoa City to reprise his role as Malcolm Winter’s, Neil’s younger brother, to say goodbye.
Moore said on Instagram that St. John “touched so many lives”.

In 2014, Kristoff lost his beloved son, Julian, to suicide–an event that friends say St. John never came to terms with.
The cause of death for Kristoff, a vegan, was determined to be heart failure after a full inquiry by the Los Angeles County Coroner that came after subsequent to initial reports that attributed his unexpected death to an alcohol overdose.
