Janet Jackson Offers Touching Instagram Tribute To Her TV & Music Video Mom, Ja’Net DuBois, Who Passed Away Tuesday

Superstar singer Janet Jackson shared a brief but touching Instagram post in tribute to her TV mama, actress Ja’Net DuBois, best known as the beloved Willona Woods on the iconic 70s Black sitcom, Good Times. DuBois passed away yesterday in her sleep, according to reports.

On the show, Jackson played the role of Penny Woods, the adopted daughter of DuBois’ character, Willona, who adopted Penny as a result of violent abuse and later abandonment by Penny’s birth mother.

The storyline helped raise awareness of child abuse in Black homes, which was a rarely discussed topic in the 1970s.

After co-starring in the series as mother and daughter for several years, Jackson later tapped DuBois to play her mom in Jackson’s 1986 ‘Control’ video:

Ja’Net wrote that she was “very saddened” by DuBois’ death, and referred to the veteran actress as her “longtime friend”.

I am so very saddened to hear my longtime friend Ja’Net DuBois has passed away. I saw first hand how she broke stereotypes and changed the landscape for Black women in entertainment.
I’m grateful in recent years I had a chance to see her and create more lasting memories. I pray for comfort for all her family and friends.
Thank you Ja’Net, I’ll miss you.

Ja’Net DuBois was 74 years old.
