If Passed Over By Biden, Val Demings Could Challenge Republican Rubio In Florida Senate Race In 2022

Congresswoman Val Demings is reported to be under serious consideration to join Joe Biden on the Democratic presidential ticket to seek to unseat President Donald Trump, whose unpopularity is growing rapidly. According to news reports, Demings, who previously served as the Orlando chief of police, is being vetted as a possible pick.

If chosen, Demings would make history as the first Black woman to be chosen as a vice presidential pick for a major party in U.S. history.

Demings has previously said she would accept a potential veep offer.

But Biden is reportedly looking at several women to potentially join him in defeating Trump, so its not a given that Demings will be chosen although lately her name has been floated around in the media a lot.

But political insiders say that is no coincidence: Democrats are happy that Demings’ name is growing so that even if she is passed over by Biden, she will be well positioned to take on Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio in 2022. Rubio is a close ally of Trump.

Demings is also mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate in Florida in 2022 as well, although Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried seems well positioned to take on Governor Ron Desantis, a Trump acolyte, in 2022.

Florida has never elected a Black woman as Governor or U.S. Senator.

Jennifer Carroll, a Black, Clay county conservative Republican, served as Lt. Governor before she was forced to step down after she was caught up in a scandal over local gaming.
